Spanish Villa Surroundings - Isla Plana, Categena, Puerto de Mazarron and La Azohia

The main beach at Isla PlanaIsla Plana is a peaceful coastal village, just 30km from the historic town of Cartagena.  The typical Spanish village offers quiet, traditional surroundings with easy access to the Costa Calida tourist towns and historic attractions.

The area was traditionally a series of fishing villages and today is popular with discerning visitors, the older Spanish properties help to retain a small village feel.  The area has not been over developed therefore the beaches are not over-crowded.

La AzohiaJust down the coast to the right is the bustling Puerto de Mazarron with its newly built marina/passao and abundance of excellent bars and restaurants.  On your left is the picturesque village of La Azohia, where fish is caught and served daily. The many beaches of Isla Plana are within a five minute walk from the villa.

The wild, rocky coastline is popular with divers.  Discover the small sandy coves hidden away along the coast towards El Portus and Galifa.  There are two main beaches in Isla Plana, one behind the social club and the other stretching along to the left and both have restaurants and local shopping nearby.  There is a beach bar during peak season along with a coast guard service during the daytime hours of the summer.

Isla Plana CoastlineHeading right, there is a lovely sheltered beach, known by the locals as Stone Beach owing to the many beautiful stones that can be found there.  Stunning coloured marble and rock jut out into the sea and create many colours of beachstones along this stretch.

The far corner of the beach is often used by surfers in the spring; the tides into this bay provide perfect surfing conditions at this time of year.

The beaches continue towards the Puerto de Mazarron.  Wind surfers can be found here when the wind is right, and Jet Skis or motorboats can be hired during the summer.  The beach is a good place to launch small powerboats and dinghies directly from the road or from the sloping beach.

Isla Plana CoveAlong the coast in the opposite direction is the beautiful town of La Azohia.  The town has plenty of long beaches equipped with everything you could wish for.  Many people head to La Azohia to make use of the launching ramps for sailing boats or the use of the marina.

Fantastic snorkelling opportunities exist around the area as the rocky coastline holds a fantastic selection of marine life.
